Ooops!
The following typos and errors have been found in the 1st Edition (2002) of Breeding for Quantitative Traits in Plants:

October 2007

  • p. 347: The following reference should be added: Lonnquist, J.H. 1950. The effect of selecting for combining ability within segregating lines of corn. Agron. J. 42:503-508. (John Zwonitzer, North Carolina State Univ.)
  • February 2006

  • p. 99: In Eq. 5.9, the subscripts in the fourth term should be "jl" instead of "jk" (Pablo Olivera, Univ. of Minnesota)
  • November 2004

  • p. 131: In Table 1.2, Activity (4) in Summer 2 should read "Select the best 200 S1 families..." (Kevin Micallef, The Univ. of Queensland)
  • March 2004

  • p. 131: For the F-test, the line should read "approximate F-test for VGCA..." (Eliza Anderson, Univ. of Minnesota)
  • January 2004

  • p. 287: The last line in the Testcrosses section should read "is simply equal to zero" (Jianming Yu, Univ. of Minnesota)
  • July 2003

  • p. 104: The line at the top of the page should read "square of testcross genotypic effects:" (Jianming Yu, Univ. of Minnesota)
  • May 2003

  • p. 128: In the equation for df1, "MSMales/sets" in the denominator should be "(MSMales/sets)2, and "MSExMxF/sets" in the denominator should be "(MSExMxF/sets)2. Likewise, in the equation for df2, "MSMales x females/sets" in the denominator should be "(MSMales x females/sets)2, and "MSExMales/sets" in the denominator should be "(MSExMales/sets)2. (Jianming Yu, Univ. of Minnesota)
  • p. 236-237: In Eq. 10.6, "- V(hat)R" should be "+ V(hat)R." The same change in sign should be made in the equations for the estimates of VGCA(1), VGCA(2), and VSCA on p. 237. The estimate of VA on p. 237 should be equal to [0.348 + (0.725)(0.406)]/4 = 0.161 (instead of 0.013). The VR/VA ratio to be used in the next iteration is 0.725/0.161 = 4.51 (instead of 55.8). (Bertrand Parisseaux, Limagrain Genetics)
  • p. 271: In the multiplicative index, the "sigma" sign should be replaced with the "pi" sign. (Tom Hoegemeyer, Hoegemeyer Hybrids)
